ARC Review: Singe by Aly Martinez

6 Feb 2017

Book Title: Singe
Author: Aly Martinez
Series: Guardian Protection #1 - Standalone
Release Date: February 6th, 2017
Genres: Contemporary Romance
She was my nightmare. Every time I closed my eyes, I watched her fall into that inferno. Over and over, I failed to save her.

I hadn’t been able to reach her, and the guilt only burned hotter over time. Four years later, I was the unreachable one.

Heroes aren’t always saints. Sometimes, we’re nothing more than jaded sinners driven by sleepless nights and hearts full of darkness.

And then I met her. She was a dreamer who managed to soothe my scars and heal my wounds.

But, as the flames closed in around us, I feared I wasn’t the right man to save her. That is until I realized she was the one woman I’d burn the world down to protect.

Wow. Aly Martinez never fails to deliver for me. She delivers so much more than romance. First and foremost, she delivers masculine, not always perfect but oh so perfectly flawed heroes. They typically love fierce and protect fierce. We got that in spades with Jude in Singe. He's an ex-cop, now a professional security guard for the rich and famous, his new job relocation back home in Chicago brings back memories of a fateful night four years ago...of a beautiful woman who fills his flashback dreams nightmares. What he didn't anticipate is that woman, Rhion Park, would live a floor below his company...and soon becomes his newest security detail.

Second, Aly Martinez delivers a serious depth of story, of plot. It's always well thought out and has a twist I never see coming. Reading hundreds of books a year, that's rare and refreshing. I tend to search out twists but she always sneaks up on me. Singe is a book chock full of suspense with a deep feeling of destiny below the surface. Of wounds formed four years ago, long since healed...or are they? Aly Martinez kept me riveted to my kindle, praying for that second chance happily-ever-after for two characters who've seen their fair share of betrayal, fear, pain, and suffering. I typically go for the tough heroines but something about Rhion drew me to her insecurities. And Jude was just what she needed to face her demons. Her fears.

Singe has a fair share of cameos from some of the other brooding alphas of the Guardian Security firm. Haven't read them yet, I aim to acquaint myself pronto with the bossman Leo. And I cannot wait to get Johnson's story. Hint hint.
